Mastodon Updates

Mastodon v4.6 was released this month bringing several new features, and some design updates, particularly on user profiles.

• Collections are now a thing that exist
• You can now import and export your filters.
• Account display name length limit increased from 30 to 40 characters
• Alt text length limit for media attachments increased to 10,000 characters
• It’s now possible to add alt-text to profile and header images, instead of writing them in your bio.

There were also a couple of minor follow up patches v4.6.1, and v4.6.2.

The few custom CSS tweaks sunny.garden had been using were broken by changes in v4.6, and @lichendust pitched in to get them updated and working again, thank you!

Increased Bot Registrations

Many Fediverse admins noted an increase in bot/spam registration attempts over the past month or so. Spammers have been using text copied from existing user profiles as their sign-up reasons in an attempt to appear more legitimate, as well as using a wide variety of disposable email services to sign up with.

This has increased the effort involved in evaluating registrations somewhat, but so far things have remained manageable, at least for sunny.garden.
