The Sunny Gardener - March 2024

Threads Again

After dipping their toe into federation back in December, Threads has now submerged their entire foot, allowing Threads users (in the US, Canada, or Japan) to opt-in to sharing their posts to the Fediverse. This is still a partial, one-way integration: Threads users can post to the Fediverse, but can’t follow Fediverse users, see their replies, or even their stars/likes.

Threads/Meta/Facebook joining the Fediverse is a contentious issue. sunny.garden is one of many servers that have chosen to block threads.net from the beginning. This is something a lot of people feel quite strongly about, and several have moved either to or from the server as a result. Unfortunately this isn’t a situation where it’s easy to satisfy everyone, but that’s one of the strengths of the Fediverse: there are many servers to choose from depending on your needs.

Summary

Except for the discussion around Threads, it was a pretty quiet month and overall activity remained fairly level. Reports went back down to a more normal level with no significant spam to speak of.

44 new users, 500 active users, 49k interactions, 12 reports opened, 12 reports resolved

As always, thank you to everyone that has donated on ko-fi, and to those who have recently added new contributions to support the upgraded server!

There’s no obligation or expectation that you donate in order to use the server, and I’m still able to cover any shortfall myself if needed.
